Questions and Answers - Bugs and Work Arounds
=============================================
Q: I run a pure OS/2 system with HPFS formatted drives. Will MaxDir work
safely on my computer?
A: Yes.
Q: Will a native OS/2 version of MaxDir soon be available?
A: Maybe. Right now live with it as a DOS program. MaxDir was written in
Turbo Pascal 7.0. If I can get someone to compile it under BP7.0
patched to compile 16 bit OS/2 code, that's one possibility. I'm also
looking into other compilers. But MaxDir is an extremely complex
program with tens of thousands of lines of code, many of which are
specific to Turbo Pascal. So let's wait and see. In the meantime, use
it with confidence. It runs fine on my OS/2 computer as well as on
the OS/2 machines of many other sysops.
Q: I have a CD ROM drive with thousands of files in one directory. MaxDir
handles my other file areas fine, but when it comes to this one, it
seems to be "forgetting" files, and screwing up. What should I do?
A: This is a known bug in MaxDir, and fortunately, there's an easy
work-around for now. What's happening is that MaxDir is running out of
memory, and the sort to disk routines don't work properly. The
solution, however, is very simple. MaxDir sorts files between COMMENT
lines of your FILES.BBS file. All you need to do is insert a comment
line or two somewhere in the middle of your FILES.BBS file. This will
solve the problem. Some suggestions:
-General Files:
BLABLA.ZIP Boring file about bla.
BLABLA2.ZIP Part two of part one of bla.
[... etc. ...]
-Other Files:
MAXDIR10.ZIP A great program!
MAX2*.LZH Maximus BBS
Comment lines always start with a space or a hyphen, and are recognized
by both Maximus and MaxDir, so you should have no problem inserting
them. This will prevent MaxDir from running out of memory in really big
file areas. Again, this is usually not a problem except with really
HUMONGOUS file areas.
Q: MaxDir takes a long time to process my CDROM drive. Is there any way to
speed it up?
A: With the next release of MaxDir I plan to implement special CDROM disk
support. MaxDir will generate a file list for your CDROM once, and then
in future runs simply "read in" this file into the allfiles list for
lightning speed. However, it is not implemented in this release.
Q: How can I get answers to my questions for setting up MaxDir?
A: Almost all problems with MaxDir are due to improper setup of the
configuration file. If it doesn't work, go through the configuration
file for MaxDir again slowly, and check everything. If you can't figure
out what the problem is, try changing a few things and try again. I
*do* answer Internet e-mail and Fidonet netmail, but please be kind to
me and try to do all the above first. Take it from me, if you do have
problems getting MaxDir running on your system, the problem lies in
your setup of the MaxDir configuration file. If all else fails, I will,
of course try to help. I'm a friendly kind of person, don't you think?
Otherwise, why would I have made MaxDir a freeware program??? However,
since I'm often travelling, it would be nice if you had additional
support. For additonal support, I suggest you contact me for a feed to
the MaxDir echo. There's lots of other MaxDir users there that can
answer your questions. Also, if you belong to Fidonet, request your RC
to backbone the MaxDir echo. It will help everyone.
