In the illustrations which follow, various types of vessels will be referred to by their rigging, the manner of identifying types of ships throughout the 19th century.
The nine examples given here cover those types commonly built in the Maritimes.
1. Ship mid-19th century. Three masts, all square rigged with single topsails.
2. Ship - late 19th century - same only each mast carries double topsails.
3. Barque - three masts - the fore and main are square rigged while the mizzen mast is fore and aft rigged.
4. Barquentine - three masts - the fore mast is square rigged and the main and mizzen are fore and aft rigged.
5. Brig 1826 - two masts, both square rigged.
6. Brig ca. 1860 - same except each mast carried double topsails.
7. Brigantine ca. 1860 - two masts; the fore mast is square rigged (with double topsails) and the main mast is fore and aft rigged.
8. Schooner - two masts, both fore and aft rigged.
9. Tern schooner - three masts - all fore and aft rigged.
