This contemporary photograph shows the Strathern of Maitland, Nova Scotia moored at a dock. The Strathern was one of the last barques constructed in the Maritime Provinces. She was built at Maitland, Nova Scotia in 1892 by Joseph Montieth for Joseph Putnam.
The photograph shows very clearly much of the rigging and deck detail. Note how the sails are furled on top of the yards. Note also the position of the deck house and lifeboats and the wind driven pump just in front of the mizzen mast.
The vessel was owned by Alfred Putnam until his death in October 1904. Later it was sold to the Strathern Shipping Co. Ltd., in Halifax.
The vessel became water logged and was abandoned at sea on 3rd May, 1908.
