The following readings in QuΘbec prehistory are listed under general categories and specific culture headings. The latter begin with the earliest cultures and proceed to the latest.
In a number of instances where publications directly referring to the province are either not available or limited in scope, reports from adjacent provinces and states are recommended, as they reflect a basically similar cultural development. An attempt has been made to list only reports that have a broad scope or that present a detailed examination of a major archaeological site. The bibliography is not only restricted but is somewhat erratic in its specific coverage. Numerous pertinent references, however, can be readily obtained from the bibliographies included in the recommended publications. For French-language publications consult the reading list included in the French text of this volume.

QUEBEC PREHISTORY

The central purpose of Canada's Visual History as a teaching aid demanded a very abbreviated and simplified outline of the 9,000 (currently known) years that people occupied the province prior to the arrival of Europeans in the early sixteenth century. As a result, many aspects of the archaeology were either omitted or collapsed into a form more readily comprehended by an audience unfamiliar with the subject. The St. Lawrence Iroquois, for example, were treated as a single group, rather than a grouping of related but distinct peoples. Much new information has been acquired since the publication of Quebec Prehistory in 1988. Indeed, over the last two decades, there has been a marked increase in archaeological monographs and articles, particularly in the journal Recherches amΘrindiennes au QuΘbec and the outlets of Quebec's MinistΦre des Affaires culturelles. As a brief summary of Quebec archaeology, rather than an in-depth statement, however, the basic validity of the outline still stands.
