Sod-covered houses, typical of the late nineteenth century, are shown in this photograph. The square window of seal intestine, set into the front of the roof on the centre house, is a survival from earlier centuries. In contrast, the short, open porch is a relatively recent innovation. It replaced the long, low entrance tunnel which has served as a cold "crap" in homes of the ancestral Thule Eskimos.
