A Stratified Site at Saglek Bay in Northern Labrador.
This site exhibits both Maritime Archaic and Palaeo-Eskimo occupations. The deepest layers (numbered 10 to 4a) are the Maritime Archaic living floors dating from 4,500 to 3,900 years ago and the Palaeo-Eskimo living floors nearer to the surface (numbered 4 to 1) date from 3,800 to 1,800 years ago. Campsites vacated by Archaic people were frequently occupied later by Palaeo-Eskimo people. As they harvested similar game, the sites were probably chosen by the Palaeo-Eskimo people for the same reasons they had been chosen by the Maritime Archaic people.
We suspect that the Palaeo-Eskimos spent most of the year at the coast even though their campsites indicate small groups capable of moving frequently to take advantage of seasonal resources. What remains of their dwellings is the hearth and a ring of rocks. They probably lived in skin tents framed with wood, the edges of which were held down with rocks. The central hearth was made of stone slabs.
