This spear or dart point, made by Maritime Archaic people, displays all the characteristics of Ramah chert. The stone is a translucent grey material containing manganese (the black band) and lumps of iron pyrites (the rusty patches).
Although Ramah chert is found only in northern Labrador, this material was widely traded during the Archaic period and later. After about 4,500 years ago it was traded up the St. Lawrence to the Thousand Islands and as far south as the state of Maine.
