Like the saltwater lagoons, saltwater estuaries provided fine hunting and fishing spots. The Tracadie River estuary in New Brunswick is a good example of a saltwater estuary where fish, waterfowl and shellfish abound. Tracadie is a Micmac word meaning "good fishing".
This map identifies places where prehistoric people are known to have camped. People followed a transhumant way of life, selecting the richest resource areas to visit for collecting food and raw materials. Many of these sites on the Tracadie estuary are believed to have been inhabited by the ancestors of the Micmacs.
