Workers in the nineteenth century did not get annual vacations. They worked six days a week, Sunday being their only day of rest. Consequently, there were few leisure activities for the working class. In MontrÄal, some workers went to Somhers park in the east end of the city on Sundays. Others organized one-day train excursions to the countryside. This photograph shows a group of Gurd's employees at their annual picnic. Some companies allowed these annual outings, during which outdoor games were organized for the workers and their families.
