Poverty and want were constant threats to working-class families in which the father was unemployed, ill, or the victim of an industrial accident. Winter was a particularly difficult time for these destitute families. This illustration from the Canadian Illustrated News (January 27, 1872) represents an actual case where two small children were found frozen to death in their home. The police officer and the coroner have come to report on the circumstances of the case.
