The most popular silver ornament among both men and women was the simple circular brooch with a tongue on the front to attach it to fabric. Many other designs were common, among them the multi-pointed star, the single heart, with or without crown, the large circular brooch with elaborate pierced designs, and the scallop-edged brooch. Many combinations of stars and circles have been found. The silversmith formed the lines of the star with curved and straight chisels and then cut away the surplus metal. He smoothed the edges with a file and decorated the surface with engravings. Once completed, the brooch was perforated near the edge of the central opening, and the tongue lunged on this.
