When the hunters returned with their catch the women of the community set about preparing the skins for later use. In this photograph, taken during the Canadian Arctic Expedition, a young woman named Kaptane scrapes a skin with her ulu, an instrument which can be seen in greater detail in illustration 12. Note that Kaptane's hairstyle, with small front braids and longer side braids, looks very chic and modern. The pots to her right are commercial products which were brought into the Arctic and gradually replaced containers such as the one seen in illustration 13.
