Goodwin was a B.C. labour leader drafted into the army in 1917 primarily because of his trade union activities. He fled to the hills near Comox, B.C. joining many other union draft evaders. In late July, 1918, a federal official came upon Goodwin and shot him to death. Goodwin's killing became a symbol of trade union defiance of conscription and touched off many strikes and demonstrations against the draft.
