The ship moves through the ice fields picking up the pans of pelts. In the lower right corner, the ship's cable has been fastened to a bundle of pelts and these are now being hoisted aboard. Boats were carried on board ship for emergencies but were sometimes put on ice to make temporary depots for the sealers. A boat with food and fuel would at times be left with a group of men if the ship steamed away to another area to pick up seals or to drop off men. Note the ship's flag in the background.
