This daguerreotype was probably taken in the late 1840s or early 1850s. The costume of this Mississauga woman has been altered. Peter Jones described the women's dress of the early nineteenth century in his History of the Ojibway Indians (p. 76): "The women wear short gowns and petticoats of deer skin, and a mantle thrown over the shoulders: they also wear leggings and moccasins neatly worked." After the decline of the large game animals (moose, deer, and in the far north, the caribou) the Ojibwa had great difficulty obtaining skins and began to use cloth.
