The Approximate Distribution of the Iroquoian Tribes at the Moment of European Contact.
The homeland of the Iroquois Confederacy in the early seventeenth century lay in the Finger Lakes district of what is now New York State. To the north and west were other members of the Iroquoian linguistic family, the Neutral, Huron and Petun (Tobacco). Before the Ojibwa migrated southward the Iroquoians completely occupied the region surrounding Lake Ontario. The name of Lake Ontario, itself, as well as the designations of several places on it: Quinte, Toronto and Niagara, are of Iroquoian rather than Algonkian origin. Considerable research in the past few years has slightly altered this map although the general distribution is the same. (On this map the Credit Mississauga's hunting territory has been superimposed, as has the present-day location of New Credit.)
