This map illustrates the rate and directions of Winnipeg's growth during this period. Notice how the city spread northwestward as a result of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Winnipeg first spread northward along Main Street, following the main route of communication between Upper and Lower Fort Garry. In the seventies the urban area spread to the west and by 1901 the urban area was expanding in all directions but eastward because of the physical barrier of the Red River.
