This photograph of Point Douglas from across the Red River shows the industrial developments that had occurred in this district. At this time industries still tended to locate near the waterfront so they could make use of the boats that navigated the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Over the years, however, water transport became less and less important. Winnipeg was first and foremost a railway city, and its rivers, the sole natural adornment of the prairie city, were unfortunately neglected.
