Magnificent example of a "Boston" armchair, as interpreted in Quebec. The turned feet and crosspieces, the seat and the completely rounded lines belong to the famous American model but the elaborate ornamentation of the back suggests the traditional chair-making of Quebec. The exuberance of Quebec creative artists has always found free expression in the cross-pieces of the backs: apart from the heart (bleeding), one notices here the lozenge and perhaps the clover in the form of joined circles: a strange mixture of the Sheraton decorative style, arrow-back, and popular design. One notices several references to the "marriage rocker", decorated with hearts, in the nineteenth century.
