Manufacturers began using newspapers to advertise their products in the early nineteenth century. It was not until the advent of the popular press in the 1880s, however, that this form of advertising really became widespread. Manufacturers advertised everything from "miracle cures" to woodstoves, clothing, and footwear. This advertisement for an oil lamp, which appeared in La Presse on May 30,1887, claims that the lamp is "invaluable to workers and a luxury for the rich!"
