By the 1920's women were increasingly able to find office jobs as secretaries and file clerks. Normally they would need a good command of English - a requirement which often eliminated a great number of the working poor who were mainly new immigrants or French-Canadians. Incomes for clerical workers were low and hours were long, but at least they were freed from the fear of seasonal unemployment and their working conditions were decent.
