Working conditions were generally very poor. Employers were reluctant to decrease profits by providing better safety devices and a more pleasant working atmosphere. The provincial factory inspectors had campaigned for lunchrooms where hot tea or soup would be available, but such facilities as these were the exception rather than the rule. These girls and women, who worked twelve hours a day, had one half hour for lunch.
