This photograph taken in 1960 by the Northway Survey Corporation Ltd. reveals that the narrow farms first shaped by the seigneury system have survived. Every family had access to the river, which was the main highway of the colony. Farm produce could be transported easily and cheaply to the markets of the colony's three towns. Access to the river made great travelers of the Canadians, unlike most of the people in Europe who rarely ventured beyond their parish boundaries. Canadians ventured to the far west and south to New Orleans.
