- The Colour Selection Window
- ---------------------------

- The Colour Selection window allows you to select and create 16 colours
- for use in painting (see 'Painting').

- The window contains three sliders at the top which show the red, green
- and blue components of the current colour (between 0 (off) and 255
- (fully on)).

- Below these is an icon which shows the current colour (as closely as
- it can, given the current mode), to the right of this 2 icons, marked
- 'Set' and 'Mask'.

- Below this is a bank of 16 icons, (numbered 0 to 15) one for each
- colour; the currently selected of these is highlighted. To select any
- of these colours simply move the mouse pointer of the icon and press
- SELECT.

- There are two ways of altering the colours. First you need to select
- the colour you want to alter, then :

- either: alter the red, green and blue components using the sliders at
- the top of the window,

- or: (make sure you are not in the middle of a paint operation when
- doing this) simply click the point pointer on a pixel in the picture
- which is the colour you require.

- Finally press the 'Set' icon to make the alteration permanent.

- You can also set the colour used as a mask in a similar manner, simply
- set the sliders up to show the desired colour and select the 'Mask'
- icon to make the selection permanent.

- Note: The selected mask colour will be saved when you save your
- configuration; however the 16 colours will not be saved - they default
- to the 16 desktop colours.

- Creating a colour scale
- -----------------------

- It is possible to get Image to create a scale of colours between any two
- defined colours. This is done by first defining the two end colours in
- non-consecutive colour icons, and then SELECTING the first of these and then
- selecting the other - using the ADJUST mouse button. Image will then fill the
- icons between the two end icons with colours that lie in between the two end
- colours.

- For example, if you define colour 0 as white, and colour 15 as black, then
- select 0 (using SELECT) and then select 15 (using ADJUST) you will have a 16
- colour grey scale from white to black.

- If the two icons selected above are next to each other, then the action Image
- performs is different (it can not create a scale between two consecutive
- icons). In this case the first selected colour is taken as a base colour, the
- second icon (the one ADJUST selected) defines two parameters.

- First of all which side the second icon is located is noted. Then the
- operation will be on all icons on that side of the first icon, other than the
- ADJUSTed icon. For example say you SELECT icon 7 and then ADJUST icon 8, then
- icons 9 to 15 will be altered in this operation.

- The second thing that the ADJUSTed icon defines is a range. It defines the
- maximum deviation from the first colour. Then all the icons to be defined by
- the operation (in the above example 9 to 15) will be defined randomly based
- on the base colour and the maximum deviation from it. This allows you to
- define colours around a base colour easily.

- Creating a User Palette
- -----------------------

- You can create a user palette, based on the contents of an Image picture
- bank, using the create palette function on the colour selector window. To
- access this function you need to extend the colour selector window to its
- full size. At the bottom of the window are three icons to define how many
- colours to create the palette with (16, 255 or 256 - 255 is for use when
- creating a GIF file with a mask).

- You can also select the quality setting for the calculation of the palette.
- The greater the number of bits the nearer the resultant palette will be
- to the original picture, but it requires much more memory and time to
- calculate (as an indication to create a 256 colour palette using 4 or 5 bit
- quality requires just over 1M of memory to be free, at 6 bit this becomes
- just over 2M, but at 7bit it would require about 10M).

- Selecting create will cause Image to analyse the picture and generate
- a 'User palette' which best matches. This palette can then be used for the
- display sprite by using the configuration options (see configuration).

- Palette files
- -------------

- If you drag a palette file to the colour selector window, and the palette
- file defines <=16 colours, then the colour selector colours will become those
- defined in that file.

- Dragging a palette file to any other Image window will cause Image to load
- the given palette into the user defined palette store (which can be used
- for the display sprite by selecting the 'User Palette' option (see
- 'Configure').

- Pressing MENU over the Colour Selector window brings up a save window which
- allows you to save either the current colours in the user palette or the
- current colour in the colour selector to a palette file.

- Dragging a GIF or BMP file to the colour selector window will extract the
- colour palette from the file and place it in the user palette.
