- -------------------
-
- I paid a visit to the reserve in the morning, chiefly to plant a few trees.
- I put in two hazel trees, on the hazel slope, and several goat willows on
- the TWIG field. I'm still not getting used to calling it Holland Mill Wood.
- I counted the rings on the felled elm tree near the sand hill, and made it
- at least 130 years old. You could add another twenty years, in view of the
- fact it had been dead that long.
-
- I accompanied a family who planted a rather tall potted oak, on the TWIG
- site. WE discovered two torpid newts, when we dug the hole. Two newts in one
- small hole. I wonder how many were using the cracks in the clay, of the
- site, that had opened up last summer, to spend the winter in.
-
- I did some cutting of trees in the coppice at the end of the meadow. I think
- I will call this area the Pollard Coppice, because of the pollard oak I
- fashioned a few years ago. I cut back some more trees and trimmed the
- pollard, with hand tools. I also transferred two little hollies, and some
- brambles, to the top ride or clearing.
-
- I finished the afternoon, by walking around with Angela.
