S3ABANK V1.5a - README
---------------------
This file is for users of V1.4 who wish to upgrade to V1.5. New users
should use the file README.NEW, coupled with the full instructions.
First point to note is that the program has grown again. This is inevitable
as more and more enhancements are added. The size of the core is now 120K
compared with 102K in Version 1.4. The sizes of the modules are roughly the
same, although some, particularly the Petrol/Gas module, have increased by
quite a few K because of some enhancements. Finally the new EXPENSES module
is also available. Therefore, if you are a bit short of room, you might decide to
stick with V1.4 or take advantage of the 'Bank-Lite' offer in BANKLITE.TXT,
to get a smaller 'customised' version.
To upgrade from V1.4, simply replace ALL the old files with new versions.
Note that there are now only two core' .OVL files instead of the three in
V1.4. Also, there is a new S3ABANK.PIC file which is used for the opening
screen. As this takes yet another 15K, I have made it optional, so if you
are short of room, don't bother installing it. All of your data should remain
unchanged, or be converted, except for the following:
1. Cheque numbers in the default transactions, which will reset to zero.
I promise the extra capability in this area will be well worth the 30 secs
it will take to reset the numbers !!
2. The only area of conflict is the word EXPENSE. Because this is the
filename used by the new Expenses module, you cannot use it for a Group
Title. If you have a Group called EXPENSE then before you upgrade, use
the 'Save As' option to save it under a new name and then use the 'Delete
Group' option to remove the original Group.
The following relatively simple enhancements have been added (All at the
request of users !!):
Core Program:
-------------
1. I have changed the opening screen and Icon. My thanks to Andy Waller
for providing them, and for all the work he has put in testing this version.
2. I have played about with the Menu structure to make it more compatible
with other Psion programs:
a. The <PSION-*> option to Toggle the Status Screen has been removed.
No other program uses a separate Menu command but just use
<CTRL-MENU>, so I decided to join them.
b. I have renamed the 'Font' option to 'Zoom', to make it compatible
with other programs. (As I use only 2 fonts, I didn't bother specifying
'In' or 'Out')
c. The Password option is now under the 'File' menu.
d. To make the program more 'Psion-Standard', I have removed the
'Config' menu from all screens, and made it a sub-Menu called 'Set
Preferences' (<PSION-*>), under the 'Special' Menu. This has also
enabled me to make some of the other 'hot-keys' more logical, although
you will be glad to know none of the main ones have been changed.
e. The 'Default Transactions' Sub-Menu is now also accessible from
the Accounts screen as well as the Transactions screen.
f. The 'Core' and 'Modules' top-level menu have been combined into a
standard 'Diamond' menu, and the 'Setup Diamond' option has also been
moved to this menu.
3. The date is now configurable between '15 Mar 95' and 'Mar 15, 95' and
the year is also optional (Except in the Home Inventory module where I
believe it is essential), all setup through 'Set Preferences' in the Account
screen.
4. Although Standing Orders continue to be sorted by due date, you can
now manually sort those Standing Orders which have the same date. (That is
for people like me, who have all their Standing Orders deducted on the 1st
of the month, although they actually occur at different times.)
5. If you select a transaction to be transferred to another account, the
Descriptions field and the Value field are now carried forward to the next
Dialog in case you would like slightly different values or descriptions.
Although the Credit/Debit transfer value is normally reversed, as that is
what happens on a transfer, you can also change that, in case you want to
use the transfer function to enter exactly the same transaction into 2
different accounts.
6. Psion-CTRL-Up/Down Arrow now acts like 'Home' and 'End'. (This actually
appeared in later sub-versions of V1.4)
7. You can now specify a Page length other than 11",12" and A4.
8. A number of people requested that the Password should be activated only
when the program is started, and not after an auto-shutdown or when Opening
a Group from within the program. This is actually how it worked in V1.2, and
I changed it in V1.3 after other users said it should work all the time.
Just goes to show I can't win !! It is now configurable to each case.
9. If you select a Budget Filter in either the Transactions or Archive
screens, the Print routines now print just those entries that match the
filter.
10. Using <C> from any screen to call the Currency Convertor rather spoiled
the option of jumping to an Item by pressing the first letter if the Item
began with C. I have, therefore, changed the 'hot key' for the convertor
to <CTRL-C>. Also, the default currencies used in the convertor are now
configurable through the 'Set Preferences' menu.
11. Interest Rate now has a multiplier to allow interest to be added at
various Monthly (or Annual) increments. Also, I have split the Interest
Rate into Credit and Debit rates in case they are different. (The Interest
Rate set in V1.4 is the 'Credit' one, so you will need to set the 'Debit'
value.)
12. Currency Rate can now be input as amount of Foreign Currency for Local
Currency or amount of Local Currency for Foreign Currency, to match the
similar option already available on the display.
13. After a number of requests, I have set 20 characters in the Reference
field to allow for people who use the small font and no Status window.
Please don't complain if you use all 20 characters and then get overlap in
the larger font. You will have to self-limit the length yourself.
14. In the Quicken Export routine, it now asks for 'DD/MM/YY' or 'MM/DD/YY'
rather than 'UK/US', as this is actually what it does.
15. The Archive 'Search' now looks at the Reference field as well as the
description, and also has a new 'Go To Date' option.
16. The 'Edit Memo' function is now available from most screens. However,
in the case of the Expenses module, the Home Inventory module, the Fuel
module and the Investment module, this will open a dedicated file associated
with that module.
17. Rather than always displaying the last Archive file used, you can now
configure the program to display either : the last file used; always display
a default archive; or always enter a 'Select Archive' dialog.
18. Pressing the first letter of a Country in Currency Screen takes you to it.
19. Entering a new Account now puts it in at the cursor position rather
than at the end.
20. There is now a third option for the 'Balance' window in the Transaction
screen. In addition to 'Initial Balance' and 'Current Balance' you can now
have 'Total Balance'. This new option will include Deferred transactions,
even if the normal display is set to ignore them when calculating balances.
21. I have reordered the dialog in the Currency Convertor, so that the
highlight always starts on the 'Amount' field.
22. I have added a 'Delete Reconciled'/'Delete All' option to the 'Archive'
'Remove' function, to allow for block deletes. The difference is that
'Remove' updates the Account Balance before clearing the transaction,
whereas 'Delete' just wipes them out.
23. I have added a 'MS Money' to the 'Import' and 'Export' option, because
MS Money doesn't seem to follow the official QIF format.
24. The location of the 'Edit Memo' file is now configurable. (It defaults
to the normal \BANK\ subdirectory, but you may want it in the \WRD\ directory.
25. In the transaction screen, t
