The Quiz Master (TQM)
Version 1.1 (for Psion 3a)
Copyright (c) 1994 UK, JLM SWASH
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
1) SHAREWARE REGISTRATION:
This program is offered as shareware. It is not free, neither is it
Public Domain software. If you appreciate this program and plan to
use it for longer than a reasonable trial period of 30 days then you
should register it by sending 10 pounds (†10), payable to J. Swash,
to the following address:
18 Uplands,
Delamere Park,
Northwich,
Cheshire,
CW82XL (UK)
In return for the registration fee I will send you a password which
will allow you to access the full set of 1000 quiz questions
provided in the file TQMEGA.qiz plus details of how to use TQM with
other sets of quiz questions on any topic which you have compiled
yourself.
2) INTRODUCTION:
I started playing for a team in a quiz league a few years years
ago. Each team has to take it's turn at setting the rounds of
questions and acting as question master. I found my Psion 3 came in
handy for noting down any interesting questions which occured to me
at odd times and places.
To what started out as a simple Psion database I have added quite a
few "bells and whistles" including the option of rounds on 10
selected topics or random "pot-luck" questions on any topic, a
variable time delay between the question and answer appearing on
the screen, and score keeping. This enables The Quiz Master program
to be used as a family quiz game in its own right or for
self-testing.
As in Trivial Pursuits each quiz comprises a database of several
hundred questions, which can be divided into subject areas; for
example the TRIVIA & TQMEGA quizes provided with TQM have rounds on
the following topics:
1.Art & Lit. (including antiques,crafts,literature, etc.)
2.Entertainment.(including film, theatre,TV, hobbies etc)
3.Geography. (Where on Earth am I?-includes UK & world)
4.History. (ancient & modern)
5.Miscellany. (catchall)
6.Music. (pop,jazz,& classical)
7.Nature. (fur,feather,frond,fish etc)
8.People & Politics.( includes some current affairs)
9.Science. (includes technology & engineering)
10.Sport. (not just the usual "ball-bashers")
Compiling your own quiz rounds on the topics which interest you and
trying them out on your friends and family can be fun;
for example, if sport is your thing why not a compile a quiz with
10 rounds dedicated to different sports?
Registered users will be told how to use TQM to compile & set quizes
on any subject of their choice. The only limits are your
imagination and available memory!
3) INSTALLATION:
After using PKUNZIP you should have the following files:
TQM.DOC - This file.
TQM.OPA - The TQM program file.
TQM.PIC - The icon associated with this application.
TRIVIA.QIZ- A limited set of 60 trivia quiz questions.
TRIVIA.CFG- A configuration file for the above.
TQMEGA.QIZ- A more comprehensive quiz with 1000 questions.
TQMEGA.CFG- A configuration file for the above.
Using the Series 3 link (MCLINK) copy TQM.OPA to any \APP\ directory
on the S3A.
Copy TQM.pic to the \OPD\ directory.
Create a directory called \QIZ\ on the S3a. This can either be on
the internal ramdrive or a Flash disk.
Unregistered users copy TRIVIA.QIZ & TRIVIA.CFG files to the \QIZ\
directory. This is a small trial set of questions provided to
unregistered users for evaluation purposes only. You will only need
about 8.5K of free disk space for these files.
Registered users copy TQMEGA.QIZ & TQMEGA.CFG files to the \QIZ\
directory, which may be on any drive , including a Flash disk. Make
sure the disk has about 82K of free space remaining. Note that the
questions in TQMEGA.QIZ cannot be read without a password which is
only provided to registered users, so it is pointless installing
these files unless you decide to register.
Install TQM.OPA from the system menu (or Psion I) and the icon should
appear with the filenames of any installed quizes, eg TRIVIA, TQMEGA
To use TQM just select the file name of the quiz in the filelist
under the TQM icon (for unregistered users the only quiz
available file should be TRIVIA ).
4) THE MAIN MENU:
Once you have started the program the Main MENU presents the
following options:
Pot-luck:--------->Questions are chosen at random from the entire
database of quiz questions in any order.
Select Topic:----->Use left & rt arrows to choose 1 of 10 topics
Questions on that topic are presented in order
of record no. in the database.
No. of questions:->Set the number of questions in a round,
Values from 1 to 50 are allowed, default=10.
Secs to answer:--->The delay in secs for the answer to be screened
Values of 1 to 30 secs allowed,default=10secs.
Password:--------->N.B. TQM quiz datafiles cannot be read without the
correct password entered here. The default code for
unregistered users is *UNREGISTERED*
Quit:------------->Not too soon I hope!
Help:------------->A simple reminder screen can be read from the
Main Menu by pressing the <HELP> key.
<ESC> returns to the Main Menu.
Use UP/DOWN arrows to highlight the chosen option.
5) SETTING PREFERENCES:
The default settings (time delay of 10 secs & 10 questions per
round work wel if you are using TQM to ask other people the
questions. They are what we actually use in my quiz league with a
question master & two teams of four players. If you are using TQM
to test yourself you may prefer a shorter time delay and more
questions per round.
The Menu allows you to choose between a "pot-luck" general
knowledge quiz or a quiz round on any of 10 "specialist" subjects.
In"Pot-Luck" mode the questions are selected at random from the
whole database regardless of category. There is a small chance that
questions will be repeated in later rounds. If this happens use
<TAB> to skip the question. The program does not allow a question
to be repeated until at least 50 different questions have been
asked.
When you choose a quiz on a selected topic ( for example in
TQMEGA.QIZ you could choose a round of 50 questions on sport), the
questions are never repeated during the round, but the same
questions may reappear in a later round on the same subject.
In order to avoid repitition of questions in a quiz on selected
topics, either choose different specialist topics for each round or
use smaller quiz-rounds (eg 5 successive rounds of 10 questions on
the same subject can be selected without any repitition).
6) GETTING STARTED:
To start the quiz, once you set your preferences, move the cursor
either to <Pot-Luck> or <Selected Topic> and hit <Enter>; the quiz
questions and answers should start appear.
If the questions & answers presented are unreadable (ie a random mix of
charachters) you need to return to the main menu (by pressing
<Menu>+<Y> keys together, a few times if required) and check that the
password is correctly typed (including case & symbols such as *).
7) QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION:
If you wish to keep a record of your score use Y & N keys. To skip a
question without affecting the score, or if you're not bothered
about scoring, hit the <TAB> key.
Instead of waiting for the answer you may over-ride the preset time
delay by pressing the <SPACE BAR>, this forces an immediate
answer.
When the preset number of questions has been asked the program
prompts you to return to the main menu and the score is reset to
zero for the next round. You should note t
