Shauna Gillies Smith is occupied with public works and architectural design. She was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1963, and studied economics at Queen's University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, architecture at the University of British Columbia, receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree, and at Harvard University, where she received the degree Masters of Urban Design. She practices in Boston, Massachusetts, and has taught at Harvard University, Rhode Island School of Design, Tulane University, and the University of British Columbia.
Scope and content
The work, entitled "'Super Natural' British Columbia" consists of documents related to the winning competition entry and realization of a public art project in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1996, by Shauna Gillies Smith, threatened with dismantling in 1997, including a black and white photoprint, 19 x 26 cm, of the completed public art at night, a model of stage 2 of the competition, a letter from a consultant deeming the public art unsafe, the competition brief, Gillies Smith's stage 1 description, and an invoice for rock installation at Eton, Cambridge and Oxford Streets in East Vancouver.
