Tim Rattel is a mixed media artist born in Toronto, Ontario in 1967. After studies in English literature and visual art at Simon Fraser University he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later pursued studies at the University of British Columbia where he received a Master of Fine Arts degree.
Scope and content
The work, by Tim Rattel, 1997, consists of a series of four viewing trays made of wood, 38 x 26 x 3 cm, displaying: tray 1, 1 teddy bear, 4 toy cars, 1 toy gun; tray 2, 1 tie, 1 tie bar, 2 cufflinks, 1 cologne bottle, 1 belt; tray , 1 jock strap, 2 decals; and tray 4, 1 pair handcuffs, 1 figure eight (leather), 1 cock ring, and 1 pair nipple clamps.
Note
The artist accompanied the collection with the following statement: "For this archive I am displaying a collection of objects that codify the myth of normative masculinity while pointing to some deviance, individualism, and alternate ways of being male. These signs and their signifiers are part of the male experience and identity construction that informs my art practice."
