Dana Dansereau is an artist working with installation and combining sculpture and technology, born in Victoria, British Columbia. in 1970.
Scope and content
The work consists of a metal ammunition case, 26 x 17.5 cm, adapted with the addition of a laser. energy cells, and switch, and labelled with warning signs on the case and the inside face of a document box in which it is installed.
Note
The artist noted that: "A switch on top of the military ammunition case calls the viewer, an indication something should be turned on. Switching it on, the participant sees the stream of red laser light emitting from the case. This must be what the Danger signs are all about. What does the danger of this laser have to do with the text warning the viewer "art can be dangerous?" Open the box and find out. Art is no different than technology. It can be empty and it can be dangerous. It has the ability to affect, but it can be mere decoration. This portable sculpture is made from salvaged military and corporate technologies. Deliberate use of the military ammunition case is meant to draw attention to the power of artistic texts. And the invasive but ineffectual laser light manages to use the language of war but avoids the outcome."
