Anna Cameron is a figurative painter born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1966. She studied at the University of Toronto from 1984-1988, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree, and at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design from 1993-1997, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Scope and content
The work consists of four black and white photocollage cubes, 4 x 4 cm, depicting body parts and intended to act together as a puzzle, and a presentation case for the cubes set within a document box.

The artist observed; "In my current practice of figurative painting, photography acts as the
starting point. Through manipulation of photographs, (cropping and dividing and rearranging), the resulting images of the human body are pushed into a new context in which the viewer is invited to complete the picture. While the division of the image into a number of panels aids in conveying the theme of connection and disconnection, it also serves to disrupt the viewer's gaze. The ambiguity of the resulting image leaves much to the imagination of the viewer. The voyeuristic gaze is discouraged, and the curious, speculative gaze is invited. Whether deriving from a single photograph, or from the forced combination of two distinct photographs, the final painted image is freed from original context and stands on its own for interpretation."
