Doreen Rose Newell is a Canadian printmaker born in Vancouver, British Columbia. After studies in Western art history at the University of British Columbia leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, she studied printmaking at Emily Carr College of Art and Design.
Scope and content
The work consists of three joined panels in multiple media; opening and reading from left to right are: "Hustle Bustle," an embossed woodcut, intended to express a gathering of new ideas, 1997; an etched plate from 1992 with two three-quarter profiles, of which the artist states: "This plate has been printed many times, and I feel the etching plate is attractive as well as the print itself;" a 1997 collage of assembled artifacts, including a pad which contains quick sketches, a tiny family group photo, with the artist marked 'X;' the artist's 1979 lithograph of a hippo, of which she remarks: "While travelling I have seen many animals, flowers and fauna;" an animal worked from metal, with a concept resulting from work in a jewelry course, in 1995; and a 1997 lino cut, with a totem and bench, about which the artist observes: "I was born and bred in Vancouver, and studied Anthropology."
Notes
The artist noted that the work is intended as "Presenting a free-standing triptych which exhibits the six different approaches in printmaking that I have selected."
The artist noted additionally that "My middle name is Rose and I am very partial to this colour."
