- The information in this article applies to:
-
- - Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
- - Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

-
- SUMMARY
- =======
-
- You cannot run CHKDSK while at a command prompt unless you are logged on as
- administrator or have administrative rights.
-
- MORE INFORMATION
- ================
-
- This behavior is by design. If you try to run CHKDSK and do not have
- administrative rights, an "Access Denied" message appears.
-
- CHKDSK uses DASD (Direct Access Storage Device) to access a volume and is
- reserved to system administrators for security reasons. Opening a volume
- for DASD access bypasses the file system thereby allowing you to directly
- access (and change) the disk.
-
- If you want to run CHKDSK, log on as Administrator or as any user that is a
- member of the Administrators group.
