  15. SYMPTOMS
  16. ========

  18. When you attempt to read from or write to a disk, one of several
  19. error messages appear; the most common is "invalid medium."
  20.  
  21. CAUSE
  22. =====
  23.  
  24. There is a problem in the SMC 661-666 series floppy controllers and
  25. their device drivers (FLOPPY.SYS).
  26.  
  27. RESOLUTION
  28. ==========
  29.  
  30. If you have the an SMC floppy controller from the 663-666 range, the
  31. fix (see Status section below) should solve this problem immediately.
  32. For the 661 and 662 builds, you will need to add a Registry value in
  33. addition to installing the fix to solve the problem:
  34.  
  35. NOTE: By adding this Registry value, you may reduce floppy disk
  36. performance by as much as 40%.

  38. In the following key, add a value called NotConfigurable, data type
  39. REG_DWORD, and value of 1:

  43. STATUS

  46. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and
  47. Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. A fix to this problem is in
  48. development, but has not been regression-tested and may be
  49. destabilizing in production environments. Microsoft does not
  50. recommend implementing this fix at this time. Contact Microsoft
  51. Product Support Services for more information on the availability of
  52. this fix.
