  16. The recommended Remote Access Client for Windows NT is RAS 1.1a. This
  17. package is available at no charge to owners of Windows NT. See the
  18. following for more information. This article also contains additional
  19. information on older RAS client packages.

  21. RAS CLIENT INFORMATION
  22. ======================

  24. RAS 1.1a
  25. --------
  26.  
  27. RAS 1.1a is the recommended client software to use with Windows NT
  28. Remote Access Servers. If you own Windows NT or Windows NT Advanced
  29. Server, you can obtain RAS 1.1a for no charge through a fulfillment
  30. coupon located in the back of the Windows NT "System Guide." RAS 1.1a
  31. will also be available through the individual MS Network License
  32. packages. You can install RAS 1.1a on any supported operating system
  33. that has MS Network License. For example, all purchased copies of
  34. Windows for Workgroups 3.1 have the right to use RAS 1.1a at no
  35. charge.

  37. MS-DOS clients need to own a MS Network License such as MS LAN Manager
  38. or the Microsoft License Pack for Networks.
  39.  
  40. In general, RAS 1.1a now supports flow control, error correction and
  41. modem data compression. In addition, it has an expanded supported
  42. modem list to match up with Windows NT RAS.
  43.  
  44. RAS 1.1a contains two versions of the MODEMS.INF file. MODEMS.INF
  45. contains standard initialization strings. MCOMP.INF contains
  46. initialization strings with flow control, error correction and modem
  47. compression enabled for most modems.

  57. RAS 1.1 was only available as a complete Server and Client package for
  58. use with MS OS/2 LAN Manager server and LAN Manager clients. Major
  59. enhancements of RAS 1.1 over 1.0 include: X.25 support, Windows for
  60. Workgroups 3.1 direct installation support, and so on.

  62. All clients running RAS 1.1 should upgrade to RAS 1.1a.

  64. All RAS 1.1 OS/2 LAN Manager servers must stay at this level or
  65. upgrade to Windows NT Advanced Server.

  67. RAS 1.0

  70. This is the original Remote Access Product and is no longer for sale
  71. by Microsoft. RAS 1.0 was only available as a complete Server and
  72. Client package for use with MS OS/2 LAN Manager server and LAN Manager
  73. clients. Any RAS 1.0 servers or clients should upgrade.

  75. RAS OPERATING SYSTEMS

  78. Windows for Workgroups 3.1
  79. --------------------------

  81. Windows for Workgroups 3.1 is its own MS Network client. It does not
  82. require MS LAN Manager. RAS 1.1a should be installed directly with
  83. Windows for Workgroups 3.1. RAS 1.1 will recognize Windows for
  84. Workgroups 3.1 clients by default, but version 1.1a is recommended.
  85. RAS 1.0 is not recommended for this client.

  87. Microsoft Windows 3.1
  88. ---------------------

  90. Microsoft Windows 3.1 requires MS LAN Manager 2.x software. You can
  91. individually purchase MS Network License Packs for your MS-DOS
  92. Clients. RAS 1.1a is recommended client software. The best solution
  93. for this operating system is to upgrade Windows for Workgroups and RAS
  94. 1.1a.

  96. MS-DOS 3.3-6.0
  97. --------------

  99. MS-DOS versions 3.3 through 6.0 require MS LAN Manager 2.x software.
  100. You can individually purchase MS Network License Packs for your MS-DOS
  101. Clients. RAS 1.1a is recommended client software.

  103. MS OS/2 1.3x
  104. ------------
  105.  
  106. Microsoft OS/2 versions 1.3x require MS LAN Manager 2.x software for
  107. MS OS/2. This is only available as part of MS LAN Manager Server
  108. package.
  109.  
  110. In order to use this as a RAS client, you must get RAS 1.1--not RAS
  111. 1.1a. RAS 1.1a does not support OS/2. RAS 1.1 is only available as a
  112. separate server package for MS LAN Manager server. It includes both
  113. client and server software for MS OS/2 and MS-DOS.

  115. OS/2 2.x
  116. --------
  117.  
  118. There is no RAS support for OS/2 2.x.
  119.  
  120. Windows NT
  121. ----------
  122.  
  123. Windows NT includes both RAS client and server software. Windows NT
  124. RAS is backward compatible with all previous versions.

  131. Network Client version. The column titles are the various RAS packages
  132. that have been produced by Microsoft.

  188. A = RAS Software Compression. Windows NT RAS introduced a new RAS
  189.     feature called Software Compression. This allows data to be compressed
  190.     before it is transferred. This will work on any modem even those that
  191.     do not support modem hardware compression. Depending on the data type,
  192.     Software Compression can offer 2 to 1 compression ratio or higher.
  193.     This feature offers the best RAS performance available on any
  194.     platform. It is not recommended to use both hardware and software
  195.     compression at the same time.
  196.  
  197. B = Flow Control, Error Correction and Modem Compression. Hardware Flow
  198.     Control[RTS\CTS] is available in RAS 1.1a and later. With Flow
  199.     Control enabled, RAS can also take advantage of error correction and
  200.     modem compression. This can significantly improve performance and
  201.     throughput.

  203. C = Enhanced Supported Modem List. Windows NT Supports over 100
  204.     different modem models. RAS 1.1a supports nearly that many.
  205.  
  206. D = ISDN Support. Integrated Services Digital Network support.
  207.     Drivers are included for Digiboard ISDN cards. Supports up to 128K
  208.     bps.
  209.  
  210. E = X.25 public switch network support.
  211.  
  212. F = 16550 FIFO UART chip support.
  213.  
  214. G = Support for 3rd party external security hosts.
