  15. WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious,
  16. system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to
  17. correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting
  18. from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your
  19. own risk.

  21. Searching for a particular value in the Windows NT Registry can be
  22. very time consuming. Registry Editor provides a Find Key function to
  23. search for a particular key, but it has its limitations. You may know
  24. the value you want, but have no idea what key to look under.
  25.  
  26. For example, you want to remove an entry which loads an application
  27. each time you log onto Windows NT. You know that in Windows 3.x the
  28. filename would be on the LOAD= line of the WIN.INI file. However, you
  29. do not know what key it would be under in the Windows NT Registry.
  30. Using the Find Key option doesn't help because you don't know what key
  31. to look for. The following procedure uses Notepad to help you search
  32. the Registry database:
  33.  
  34. 1. Start Registry Editor from the Administrative Tools group.
  35.  
  36. 2. Select the desired hive, such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  37.  
  38. 3. Select the main key you want to search. If you want to search the
  39.    entire hive, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  40.  
  41. 4. From the Registry menu and choose Save Subtree As.
  42.  
  43. 5. Type a filename such as SEARCH.TXT.
  44.  
  45. 6. Open SEARCH.TXT with Notepad.
  46.  
  47. 7. Open the Search menu and choose Find.
  48.  
  49. 8. Enter the key, value, or text to search for.
  50.  
  51. This procedure enables you to easily and quickly find values in the
  52. Registry.
