  19. Garbled sounds may occur when you paste Clipboard text using the
  20. Control menu in a text-based application (for MS-DOS, OS/2, and so
  21. on). This occurs if a menu is open in the application when Edit Paste
  22. is chosen from the Control menu.
  23.  
  24. CAUSE
  25. =====
  26.  
  27. When pasting information into a console (text-based application),
  28. Windows NT sends messages to the application as if the appropriate
  29. keys were being pressed to type the Clipboard text directly into the
  30. application. While a menu is open in a console application, the
  31. keystrokes sent by Windows NT actually trigger events in the console
  32. application's menu. Most of the characters in this stream of data may
  33. not have any meaning in the menu structure, they therefore can cause
  34. one or more "Error" beeps.

  36. Steps to Reproduce Problem
  37. --------------------------

  39. 1. From a command prompt, start a text-based application, such as
  40.    EDIT.COM.
  41.  
  42. 2. Cut some text from the application by doing the following:
  43.  
  44.    a. From the Control menu, choose Edit.
  45.  
  46.    b. Choose Mark And Edit, and then choose Copy.
  47.  
  48. 3. Open the Control menu again while one of the menus in the
  49.    application is open.
  50.  
  51. 4. From the Control menu, choose Edit And Paste.

  56. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1
  57. and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this
  58. problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge
  59. Base as it becomes available.
