See "Automated Installation" below for details on using "XR501INS.ZIP".
Better be sure to read "NEWIN501.DOC" thoroughly! It is your guide to
changes between the 5.00 release and this 5.01 release. (although any
new CONFIG.XRS parameters are detailed inside "CONFIG.NEW")
The new XRS501.DOC file by Rudi Kusters contains everything a new user
needs to now about XRS and its interaction with related programs. For
professional users that prefer printed documentation, see "REGISTER.XRS"
for details on printed manuals (which are much enhanced since they include
screen illustations, etc) and diskette update services. Printed manuals
are available for both XRS and XCS.
All files linked at runtime or dynamically have been renamed *.DLL - i.e.
XRSLANG.DLL, XRSCORE.DLL, RESP_RTL.DLL, etc.
There are only two version of the program available - a 'generic' one to
work on any computer and a '286 version for 286 or better and NEC V20/30.
Each program provides cached overlaying, non-cached overlaying and non-OVL
versions all in one. See "REQUIRED.RAM" for details on adjusting default
memory allocations. Normally, this is never required - batch files have
been provided to automatically set "Non-overlayed" versions' settings in
the DOS environment (use RESPONSE.BAT or RESP_286.BAT). The values for
some of the options have changes in the RESP*.BAT files since the 4.5x
version of XRS - you should replace them, too!
NOTE: Unless you use the automated install program, you *MUST* delete your
old RESP_286.EXE and/or RESPONSE.EXE files, or the substitute .BAT versions
will never be found! Delete any obsolete RESP*.OVL files, XRS*.DTA and
XRS*.RTL files at this time, too. (if you use INSTALL.EXE, all of this
should be done for you)
Automated Installation
This version 5.01 comes with an optional automated installation program in
XR501INS.ZIP which will fully install and configure your copy of XRS if you
prefer.
Automated install requires at least one 720K or larger floppy (maybe larger
if you pick more options) or a RAM-drive or hard disk of the same size. It
only works for installing XRS to a hard disk! Read "2FLOPPY.XRS" instead if
you have a 2 360K floppy (or single larger floppy) only computer! Install of
everything requires at least 1 MB diskette or RAM for the install drive and
1.8MB of disk space on the target hard drive. A minimal installation needs
500K on the install disk and 700K on the target hard drive. XRS 5 by default
wants you to have XCS installed, because it will seemlessly interface with
several of the XCS programs if found, so default installation requires 800K
install space and 1 MB on the target hard drive. A "maximal" installation
(including all the XRS executables, all of XCS, all the docs, etc) will take
1.2MB on floppy and 2 MB on the target drive.
To use the install program, you must have a floppy or RAM drive meeting the
above requirements and copy the various XRS*.ZIP files onto it along with
all files contained inside the XR501INS.ZIP archive, and type "INSTALL".
The install program automatically sets up a default CONFIG.XRS if you don't
already have one, creates the inbound and outbound directories if needed
and removes any old (obsolete) files from previous versions if found.
There are a total of six XRS5*.ZIP, XREd and XCS110?.ZIP files:
XRS501.ZIP - Required for any installation (manual or using install)
XRS501AT.ZIP - XRS "'286" executble only - runs on 286 and up or NEC V20/30
XR501INS.ZIP - The automated installation program and XRConfig configuration
XCS110S.ZIP - Rudi Kusters' "eXpress Conversion System" 1.10 standard edition
XCS110P.ZIP - Rudi's eXpress Conversion System 1.10 "professional extensions"
XRED_300.ZIP - The new "GUI" (even under DOS!) XREd ASCII text file editor
WINXRED3.ZIP - The new Windows 3.x version XREd ASCII text file editor
XCS110S.ZIP is required for 'standard' or "QWK-only" XCS option whether being
installed manually or using the INSTALL program. XCS110P is required only if
you need the "professional extensions" of XCS. You can run the install with-
out either of them, and install them later if you prefer.
Place the required files (still *compressed*) along with uncompressed
contents of XR501INS.ZIP onto a diskette and run "INSTALL" from the diskette
drive (or RAM-disk or network drive).
