Judging Distances
With a map: Measure the distance on your map from where you are to
your destination, using the base of your orienteering compass. Then
convert it to the actual distance using the map scale. Topographic
maps are so detailed that usually you can progress from landmark to
landmark without needing to know the specific distance, but if done
correctly you should be able to determine the distance within a few
feet.
Your Pace: Count every "double-step" and then multiply by the length
of your pace to determine how far you have traveled. For instance if
you count every time you put left foot down and take 10 of the
"double-steps" to cover 50 feet, your pace is 5 feet. Once you
determine this, you would then know that you have to take 1000 paces
to walk 1 mile.
