Once you understand a compass. you can use it with a topographic
map to travel with complete confidence in the wildest terrain. To
get one, stop at your local camping store or write to one of the
addresses listed later. Maps come in 7.5 and 15 minute series. The
7.5 series covers 1/8 th degree of longitude, about 7 miles. This
means that 1 inch on the map represents 3/8 of a mile. Contour lines
show elevation, so you can plan your trip around rough terrain
features. When you get a map, examine it closely, as it contains a
wealth of information, some of which is:
Contour lines: brown, showing elevation. Houses: Black squares.
Other Manmade feature: Black, and a variety of symbols for bridges,
towers, dams, minor roads. Major highways: Red.
White areas: Cultivated or cleared land. Green: Forest or brush.
Longitude and Latitude lines. Blue: From rivers, lakes to swamp.
Angle of Declination: This lets you know how much you have to
compensate in your calculations for the difference between the
magnetic north your compass reads and the true north, which will be
at the top of your map. For instance, if you wanted to travel at
45 and the declination indicated is 10 West, you add 10 , and set
bearing at 55 . If declination is East, subtract. Think about it!
