I. INSTALLATION
This program may be run from this floppy disk by simply making this disk
the active directory and typing TIMELINE.
Alternately, the program may be copied to a hard disk and run from there.
Simply copy all of the files from this disk into a directory on your
hard disk, change to that directory, and type TIMELINE.
In either case, all of the data files must be in the current working
directory for the program to work properly.
If you would like to be able to run the timeline program from any
directory, you must set the environment variable "TIMELINE" to the
path where the timeline files are stored. For example, if you have
stored the files in c:\timeline, the command "set TIMELINE=c:\timeline"
will set the environment properly. You may also want to add the
timeline directory to your path. Either of these changes can be made
to your autoexec.bat file so that they will happen automatically
every time you turn on your computer. Consult your nearest DOS
"expert" for help. Better yet, read your DOS manual and learn
about the DOS environment yourself. It's better than relying
on fancy and often confusing "automatic" installation procedures.
And it's much better than always needing a DOS "expert" to answer
your qestions.
II. USING THE PROGRAM
This program is easy to use. Feel free to dive in and explore without
reading these instructions.
This program is most easily operated with a mouse. All of the program
options can be selected with pull-down menus across the top of the screen.
The scroll bar in the lower right hand corner can be used to quickly
move about the timeline. Click on the arrows to scroll. Drag the
pointer to move quickly. Click on any highlighted letter (usually the
first letter of an event or a person's name) to get additional
information about that person or event.
All of the options also have keyboard equivalents. Use the "Alt"
key along with the first letter of any menu name to select that
menu. The arrow keys can be used to move about the timeline.
The "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys can be used to quickly
scroll through the timeline. Move the cursor on top of any highlighted
letter to get additional information about that person or event.
The word "MORE" appears in the lower right hand corner of the
screen to indicate that additional information is available about
a highlighted topic. Press the <ENTER> key to display this
additional information.
III. REFERENCES
For a good summary of the Old Testament chronology upon which
most conservatives are in general agreement, and upon which
the Old Testament portion of this timeline is based, see the
book "A Survey of Israel's History," by Leon Wood.
There are many details of chronology about which there is widespread
disageement. In constructing a timeline such as this one, it is
necessary to pick one interpretation -- a timeline is not conducive to
presenting and discussing multiple points of view. If you want a detailed
discussion of the various chronological possibilities, go to your
library. If you want to see the broad sweep of history in an overall
perspective, this timeline will help.
IV. DETAILS
This program may be freely distributed provided you do not change it
in any way. You may not charge for it beyond normal distribution costs.

Obviously, the history of the world is a huge topic, and many important
people and events are omitted. If your favorites are not included,
feel free to write and tell me. If you find errors, I will try
to fix them. Significant contributions may be rewarded with
a free copy of any upgrades.
Your comments and suggestions about the program are encouraged, and
