WORDY
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
Welcome to Wordy, a text-based educational word construction game. The
object is to make as many words as possible from the given letter set within
the alloted three minute time limit. Words must be constructible from the
letter set displayed, may not be duplicate words (big penalty), and must be
contained in the 94,000+ word dictionary contained in the program. Words are
checked "on the fly" immediately as entered, then scored and displayed.
After pressing a key at the opening screen, the participant advances to the
Play Screen. The display now shows four windows. The small window on the
upper left keeps track of time left in the round of play. The middle window
on the left displays player status - whether the last word played was valid,
the score for the last played word, and the total score. The bottom window
on the left is the Word Entry window, into which the player enters each word
constructed [followed by the ENTER key, of course]. The large window on the
right is the Word Display window, showing the valid words played, numbered
in sequence. After the 12th displayed word the window scrolls, making it
necessary to remember previously entered words to avoid the (big) duplicate
word penalty. At the end of the three minute time limit, the round ends and
the summary screen shows the time / date, letter set, the final score, and a
list of the valid words entered. The round may be ended before the three
minutes elapses by simply pressing ENTER without typing a word.

Valid words are scored as follows.
1 or 2 letter words = -5 points.
[Trivial short words get penalized.]
3 letter words = 1 point.
4 letter words = 3 points.
5 letter words = 6 points.
6 letter words = 15 points.
7 letter words = 35 points.
8 letter words = 100 points.
[Words with 9 or more letters are not supported in this version of WORDY.]
Additionally, for each word after the eighteenth, there is an extra 2-point
per word bonus to compensate the player for remembering previously entered
words that had scrolled out of the Word Display window.

The words entered by the player are immediately tested for:
a) constructibility from the letter set in use,
b) duplication of a previously entered word,
c) "validity" (being in the word game dictionary).
A non-constructible word carries a 10-point penalty, a duplicate word a
hefty 50-point jolt, and a word not in the dictionary only a 5-point
deduction from the running score.

OPTIONS:
By simply typing WORDY, the player receives a set of 12 letters chosen at
random.
By typing WORDY followed by a number between 0 and 65536, the player
gets a repeatable random set of 12 letters (for example WORDY 27254 uses the
letter set <rsrrlbmejeoe> each time). This option is for competitive play,
as each player receives the same letters. The players awaiting their turns
are not allowed to peek, of course. Note that it is necessary to leave a
space between WORDY and the number.
By typing WORDY followed by a set of letters (example: WORDY ABCDEFGHIJKL),
the player gets the letter set thus chosen. This option also lends itself to
competitive play.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
WORDY.EXE is for color monitors (CGA, EGA, VGA, etc.) only. If you have a
color monitor, you can safely delete WORDYM.EXE.
WORDYM.EXE is for monochrome (and Hercules tm) monitors. If you have a
monochrome system, delete WORDY.EXE and REName WORDYM.EXE WORDY.EXE.
The file WORD.LST must be in the same subdirectory as WORDY.EXE, otherwise
the game will not work properly.
500 or so points in a round is considered a particularly good score. If you
manage to break 1000 on a randomly chosen letter set, send me a post card.
This program has been tested using an 8088-based XT system with a monochrome
monitor (using WORDYM), and an 80386-SX system with a VGA monitor.
I have no idea whether it will run under Wimpdows (tm), and do not much care.
Real Men use DOS.
[Wimpdows (tm) is a copyright of the Microsloth Corp.]
