Mix cornstarch and baking soda. Gradually add water. Stir constantly over low heat until mixture forms a ball.
Remove from heat. Put on plastic wrap. Let cool and thicken. Tightly wrap and refrigerate unused clay. If necessary, thaw and knead before using.
STEP 2
Tape waxed paper to the work surface.
To make a turtle, break off 5 small pieces of homemade clay about the size of a grape and 1 big piece the size of your fist. Roll each piece into a ball. For the turtle shell, flatten the biggest ball with the palm of your hand.
STEP 3
For legs, place 2 small balls on one side of turtle's shell. Place 2 more on the other side.
Use another small ball of clay for the head. Press tiny pieces onto the turtle's shell for the tail. To make a pattern, press the tines of a fork on the dough.
STEP 4
Use the remaining clay to make other animals. Wrap any unused clay in plastic wrap and store it in the freezer or refrigerator. Let the turtle dry. Decorate it with watercolors.
