  1. BONGO BEATERS
  2.  
  3. YOU'LL NEED:
  4. 1 round oatmeal box (18-ounce)
  5. One 7x12-inch piece construction paper
  6. Tape
  7. One 24-inch piece of yarn
  8. Crayons or markers
  9. Pencil
  10. 4 cotton balls
  11. 2 unsharpened pencils
  12. Plastic wrap, cut into two 6-inch circles
  13. 2 rubber bands
  14.  
  15. STEP 1
  16. First make the bongo beater. You'll need to remove the lid from the oatmeal box.  
  17.  
  18. Now color the piece of construction paper any way you like. Cover the outside of the container with the construction paper. It may not cover box completely. Then fasten the paper with tape.

  20. STEP 2
  21. With an adult's help, use a pencil to poke two holes opposite each other about 1 inch from the top edge of the box. Then use the pencil to poke one end of the yarn through each hole.

  23. Tie a knot on each end of the yarn inside the box. That prevents it from slipping out of the holes.         Then replace the lid.

  25. STEP 3
  26. To make drumsticks, wrap 2 cotton balls around the end of an unsharpened pencil. Wrap the plastic-wrap circle over the cotton.

  28. Finally, secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band. Now your ready to make music with your bongo beaters!

  32. If you don't have an oatmeal container, here are some other ideas for homemade drums:
  33. -- A coffee can
  34. -- An empty margarine tub
  35. -- A  tennis-ball cylinder
  36. -- A powdered drink container

  38. Each will have a different sound when children beat on the lids.
