INTRODUCTION
ParaGraph International's Virtual Home Space Builder (VHSB) is a
product that lets you easily create personal 3D multimedia galleries
to enjoy with your family and friends and share with the world.
VHSB allows you to easily build galleries from scratch or modify them
using your own pictures, art, sounds, and video. You can navigate
through existing 3D Spaces, including those that come with VHSB, those
you make yourself, those that friends send to you, and those you
download from the World Wide Web.
This brief overview touches on several key features that you must
understand before you begin. For additional information, refer to the
extensive On-Line Help by clicking on the Help button in the
3D Space window (not available for the Evaluation Version).

WHAT YOU SEE
There are five windows in VHSB. The 3D Space window is where you see
the 3D Spaces. The Walker toolbox has buttons for navigation and
adjusting camera view. The Plane Builder window, in Master Mode,
displays the floor plan of the 3D Space with the Pinnochio icon, and
also includes the Camera icon and Height Control tool. The Chooser
window appears only in Master Mode, and is used to drag and drop
pictures, textures, colors, and movies. The Builder toolbox contains
controls necessary for building structures. The 3D Space Window Menu
is in the top left corner of the 3D Space Window. The Help key is in
the top right corner of the 3D Space Window.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GUEST MODE
Guest Mode lets you view prebuilt 3D Spaces. Guest Mode does not allow
you to modify the 3D Space, as you can in Master Mode. You can move
around, look around, and interact with pictures. You can also view a
prearranged walking show.
How to move around
You can freely move and jump through 3D Spaces using the keyboard, the
Walker toolbox, or the Plane Walker window. You also can jump through
a 3D Space using the View Object tool.
* Using the keyboard or Walker toolbox, press the arrows in the
direction you want to move
* If the Plane Builder window is enabled, you can move around by
dragging the tip of the Pinocchio icon. You also can double-click
on any spot in the Plane Builder Window to jump there
* You can jump about a 3D Space by first clicking on a picture
with your cursor, then pressing the View Object (target) tool. You
will appear directly in front of the selected picture
How to look around
You can look around by manipulating the camera's height, tilt, and
zoom qualities. You can adjust these features using the camera buttons
in the Walker toolbox, the keyboard, or the Camera icon in the
Plane Walker window.
How to look at pictures
Pictures may have text, sound, URLs (Web Links), and functions
associated with them. When you move the cursor over a picture,
indicators in the bottom-left corner of the 3D Space Window show the
picture's characteristics.
* If a Function is associated with a picture, the cursor becomes a
hand. Double-click on the picture to activate the function
* If the picture contains text, the first line appears at the
bottom of the 3D Space window. Click on the picture with your
right mouse-button to read the full text
* If the picture contains sound, the Attached Sound indicator in
the bottom-left corner of the 3D Space Window is illuminated. To
hear the sound, click on the picture, then click on the Play
Attached Sound tool in the Selected Object Tool Bar
* If the picture is part of an album, the Album indicator in the
bottom-left corner of the 3D Space Window is illuminated. To leaf
through the album, click on the picture, then click on the List
Album tool in the Selected Object Tool Bar
* To see a picture in full resolution, click on the picture, then
click on the True Image (magnifier) tool in the Selected Object Tool
Bar.
Walking Show
Some prebuilt 3D Spaces have a Walking Show. A Walking Show takes you
through the 3D Space by a predefined route. To start a Walking Show,
select Walking Show in the 3D Space Window Menu. To stop the Walking
Show, press any arrow key.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
MASTER MODE
In Master Mode, you can build new 3D Spaces or modify existing ones.
Master Mode gains two additional windows: the Chooser window and the
Builder toolbox. The Plane Walker window becomes the Plane Builder
window, and gains an additional tool, the Height Control tool.
Finally, the Walker toolbox receives several additional buttons.
Building
Structures in VHSB consist of one-sided surfaces. This concept can be
best visualized by imagining panes of infinitely thin one-way glass.
From one side, you can see through the glass, while from the other
side, you cannot. A box consists of six one-sided surfaces. If you are
inside the box, you cannot see any surfaces (as if you were inside a
glass cube), and can see clearly in any direction. From outside, the
cube appears solid. You can attach pictures and textures only to
visible surfaces. The Draw Wall, Add Box, Remove Box and Draw Face
tools allow you to intuitively build within this metaphor.
Draw Wall Tool
The Draw Wall tool is used to build walls. First, select the Draw Wall
tool in the Builder toolbox. Specify the wall's height by raising or lowering
the Laths [Image] of the Height Control tool, or shifting the entire tool
up or down. The wall can be as tall or short as you want, or can
even float at any height. In the Plane Builder window, click where you
want the wall to begin. Drag the cursor to stretch the wall. Double-click
where you want the wall to end. Remember: Walls, unlike Faces, are always
at right angles.
Add Box Tool
The Add Box [Image] tool is used to build boxes of any width, length,
or height. First, select the Add Box tool in the Builder toolbox.
Specify the box's height by raising or lowering the Laths of the
Height Control tool, or shifting the entire tool up or down. In the
Plane Builder window, click where you want the upper-left corner of
the box to be. Then, drag the "ghost" of the box, and click where you
want the box to end. You can immediately see the box appear in the 3D
Space window.
Remove Box Tool
To shape your box, use the Remove Box tool [Image] (scissors). First,
select the Remove Box tool in the Builder toolbox. Then, select the
height of the cut using the Height Control tool. The width and length
of the cut are specified exactly as with the Add Box tool. The process
of cutting also adds one-sided surfaces. For example, consider the
brick mentioned above. If you cut out the interior of it, you are no
longer inside a 'glass cube.' You now see the visible surfaces that
were added during 'cutting', and cannot see outside.
Draw Face Tool
The Draw Face tool creates one-sided surfaces. This tool works
similarly to the Draw Wall tool, with two exceptions. The segments
need not be at right angles. Also, you must set the surfaces in a
clockwise direction if you want the visible surface to face in or
counterclockwise if you want the surface to face out. Read Help before
using Draw Face.
Height Indicators
To determine the height of an existing surface, click on it in the 3D
Space window. You will see two Height Indicators appear on the left
side of the Height Control tool. These bars reflect the height of the
bottom and top of the surface you selected.
Chooser Window
In the Chooser window, you can select Wallpapers, Airbrush, Pictures,
and Movies. Choose the directory with wallpapers, pictures, or movies
using the Select Directory tool. You can then click and drag them from
the Chooser window into the 3D Space window to your desired location.
For advanced features for wallpapers and movies, use the Details tool.
Wallpapers
Use Wallpapers to apply texture to any surface.
Airbrush
Use Airbrush to apply color to any surface.
Pictures
You can hang a Picture on any vertical surface and resize it.
To hang a picture, click on it in the Chooser window, and drag & drop
it to the desired location. To make an album, hang pictures on top of
each other. To move and/or resize a picture, select the Move/Resize
Object tool on the Walker toolbar, click on a picture and either move
it holding the bottom-left corner or extend/decrease it holding top-right
corner. To remove a picture, select the Delete Object tool, then click on the picture.
Movies
Movies can be dragged, resized, and can have attached functions just like
pictures do. You can also paste movies as wallpaper if you select
Paste as Wallpapers in the Details dialog box.
Attach Editor
You can attach text, sound, functions and URLs to pictures, albums,
and movies to make them interactive. These tasks are done in the
Attachment Editor dialog box which is reached by pressing the Attach
Editor tool.
Where to Get Art
You can use personal photographs and art, pictures downloaded from
networks, or art from commercially purchased CD ROMs.
* Use any scanned image
* To use personal photographs, take your film to any
photo-developer, and ask to have the pictures transferred to
electronic form
* You can also use art created by any computer drawing/design
package
In the Chooser window select the directory on your hard drive, floppy
drive, or CD ROM where your art is stored. Preview your pictures, then
drag & drop them into your 3D Space.
Build a Room in 5 Easy Steps
1. Choose New 3D Space.
2. Place a box using Add Box.
3. Cut out the inside of the box using the Remove Box tool.
(Remember to leave room for walls, and use the Height Control
tool to leave a floor and ceiling).
4. Continuing with the Remove Box tool, readjust the Height Control
tool and cut out a door and several windows in the walls.
5. Drag & Drop Wallpapers, Pictures, and Movies to decorate your
room inside and out.
Saving 3D Spaces
You can save a 3D Space in two ways: using Save 3D Space and Copy All.
* Save 3D Space can be used when you plan to only view your 3D
Space on your own computer, and when all textures, sounds,
pictures, etc. will not move from existing directories
* Copy All must be used when you plan to share your 3D Space in
any way, including sending by e-mail, distributing diskettes or
publishing on the World Wide Web. The command copies all
components of your 3D Space into one directory.
Note: You cannot Copy All more than 1.4 Megabytes of pictures, textures, etc. in
your 3D Space directly to a floppy disk. Copy first to your hard
drive, then transfer the files to floppies.
Sharing 3D Spaces
You can share your 3D Spaces in many ways, including: exchanging
on floppy disks, e-mailing them, and sharing over the World Wide
Web in MUS or VRML format.
* To use floppy disks, first Copy All components of your 3D
Space into a directory on your hard drive. Then transfer all
files to one or more diskettes.
* To maintain all multimedia capabilities over the World Wide
Web, first Copy All components into one directory. Save your
3D Space in MUS format. Use an ARJ or ZIP program to
compress all files (we recommend to create a self-extraxting
archive). Upload the compressed file to your Web server, or
use any other network transfer method to share the 3D Space.
* To share over the World Wide Web, Copy All components into
a directory. Save your 3D Space in VRML format. Finally,
upload all components to your Web server.
Note: VRML 1.0 does not support movies, sounds, moving textures,
and other VHSB multimedia features.

VHSB VIEWER
The people with whom you share your 3D Space must have a VHSB Viewer.
The VHSB viewer, which you may freely distribute to anyone, is found
on your CD ROM. You, or any visitor to your Home Space, may also
download the latest version of the VHSB Viewer from ParaGraph
International's Web Site http://www.paragraph.com
