The Fate Motive has lost its last long and accented note.  It is played in this new version by the majority of the wind instruments, while the strings accompany with long tremolos. Then, the second violins and violas take the lead and play continuous triplets, while the woodwinds play the new melody.

  12. The flute and piccolo play the Fate Motive at the end of each of the two phrases.
