  10. The strings play a two-note motive on one descending step, with the second note three times longer than the first.  This is played in close imitation with the violas and low strings.

  12. At the same time, the woodwinds play the Fate Motive in an ascending sequence, with the horns, trumpets and timpani repeating the rhythm between repetitions.  Beethoven divided the orchestra into two groups, which are both divided again.
