The first string "echo" is played by the cellos and double basses. They are accompanied by ascending scales, which are played by the first violins and continued by the woodwinds. This extended "echo" is played by the woodwinds and, just as in the original theme, the strings play a variegated imitation, with the last four notes echoed three times.
Again, Beethoven succeeds in leading us to one of the highest climaxes in the movement, relaxing the tension, and preparing us for new musical ventures. Listen to how the tension subsides almost immediately.
Here too, the "Fate Motive" is clearly evident; at the end of the woodwind extension, the oboes and bassoons almost imitate the original rhythm, while the flute provides a faster variant. The motive is also played by the violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. Then, it is played by the flutes, clarinets and violins, and lastly by the violins and violas.
