Now comes a transitional passage based on running scales.

First the flute, joined later by the oboe, begins an ascending scale, echoing the last four notes. Then the violins echo the last four notes twice, lower each time. The cellos and double basses take over, adding notes to the scale. Violas, violins, and woodwinds play whole scales one after another, with a continuous crescendo. This leads us to a new variation of the first theme.
Notice the descending contrary motion of the cellos and double basses when the other instruments begin their ascending scales.
What began very softly and sweetly (dolce), leads us through a gradual crescendo to fortissimo.
