  5. Now, the woodwinds play a minor variation of the first phrase of theme No.1.

  10. This comes as quite a surprise.  After the triumphant second theme, we are enveloped by a strange variation of the first phrase of the principal theme.  Can you recognize it?

  12. Although the variation is in a minor key, Beethoven gave it the form of a march.  But, what a march!  The rapid arpeggio figure, played by the first violins, continues to accompany the whole passage.  And, the remainder of the string section play pizzicato chords.

  14. The oboe adds very short notes, providing the whole passage with a delicate tone.

  16. Here, Beethoven succeeded in producing a very special effect; the passage is considered one of the most enchanting in the whole movement.  Listen to it again with your eyes closed, and feel the beauty reign over you.
